Because We Are…

John 14:8-11
Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

Because we are like the Palm Sunday crowd, loving him one day and then a week later wanting him dead. Because we are disobedient to Jesus and don’t always pick up our cross and carry it to death. Because we are like the apostle Philip who, after three years of walking with Jesus, watching Jesus perform miracles, and being sent out to do the same as Jesus did (Matt 10:1), we still have to ask Jesus to show us he is real. And Jesus looks at us with perfect eyes of love and asks, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip?” And then because Good Friday comes and Easter arrives we now can be forgiven for all of it. Thank God Good Friday is coming. Over and over again.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:8-9
