For we walk by faith, not by sight. 2 Co 5:7
I’m not writing this question for the unbeliever. I’m writing this as you wake up and settle into your time with the Lord. I’m writing as we struggle to sit in the agitation when God seems far away. When He doesn’t answer, fix our problems, or act as we would. When the heaviness of the day makes God’s presence seem less real. Whether you’ve been saved for one year, ten years, or fifty years, these times will come, and like Abraham, we must be reminded that we are called to walk by faith.
We are not called to live by a set of rules, doctrines, or experiences. We are called to live by faith in the Savior, Jesus Christ, the living Son of God. We are called to faith in the indwelling Savior who now lives within our hearts. This is the reality you awaken to today. The very life of God has come to dwell in you and with you (Jn 14:20). Whether you feel His presence or not, He is here.
Walk by faith. Walk in it whether you’re stuck in Egypt or rejoicing in the Promised Land. Walk by faith in sadness, excitement, and disappointment. Walk by faith through temptation, fears at work, and marital conflict. Walk by faith with Him in all of it, moment by moment, every day, from now to eternity. Walk by faith, not by sight.
Release to Jesus the longing for emotional experiences and fleeting feelings of closeness based on your success or failure at self-improvement. Give up looking for miraculous signs that don’t cause anyone to believe. The Jews wanted a sign, but Jesus continually pointed them to Himself. They wanted bread, and Jesus told them, “I am the Bread.” The Jews wanted a sign, and the Greeks wanted answers, but Paul told them that it is Jesus Christ, the crucified Lord, whom we need (1 Co 1:22). Jesus was clear that the sign of the prophet Jonah would be enough, and then He rose from the dead (Mt 12:39).
Walk by faith, but don’t walk by faith alone. Find a brother and encourage him to walk by faith today. We are in a battle. Your brother needs your encouragement more than he is saying. Call him.
Our confidence is not in the strength of our faith, but in the faithfulness of Christ, who walks with us even when we cannot yet see Him.
